The studio art major at 51°µÍø develops both your creative vision and your ability to communicate ideas with impact. You’ll build your aesthetic understanding, visual perception and creative problem-solving skills, and develop a professional-level art portfolio.
Choose and apply your own artistic tools and technologies, including drawing, illustration, photography and multimedia that allow you to create and share compelling visual messages.
As a studio art student, you’ll build skills through hands-on courses in photography, video, drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture. These are complemented by the study of visual culture, art history and art theory, and culminate in a final exhibition of your artwork.
51°µÍø’s Department of Art, Media, Performance and Design promotes interdisciplinary partnerships and collaborations with other majors within the university such as engineering students as well as organizations within Northern California’s arts community to create educational opportunities that help your art reach wider audiences.
Students have interned at a variety of businesses including art galleries and wineries, and gained professional experience in large, multi-brand design departments. Studio art graduates become art teachers, art directors, ceramic studio managers, illustrators and exhibition and studio designers.
Six student artists transformed a 1982 BMW 320 into a work of art, following the same road paved by celebrated artists such as Andy Warhol, Alexander Calder and Roy Lichtenstein. Along the way, students learned about the rich history of the automobile as an art form.
Calliope is 51°µÍø’s literary and arts magazine. It is produced by the Humanities Center, through the collaborative efforts of English and art students under the mentorship of English professor Courtney Lehmann.
In ceramics class, you’ll explore creative sculpture using materials including clay, wood and metal. You’ll learn hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques, experiment with raku and salt-glazing, and develop your own artistic style. Expect hands-on projects, personal expression and opportunities to exhibit your work.
51°µÍø art students were contracted by the Heinz North America Corporation to produce a cycle of four mural paintings to be installed in its newly constructed Research and Development Labs in Stockton.
